The best literary translations are those where you don’t even realize you are reading a translation. The spirit and the character of the original author’s words shine through but they don’t feel forced into the mould of another language.
Readers should be able to immerse themselves in a story without constantly being reminded that it wasn’t written in German.

When I proofread a translation, I will ensure
correct spelling and grammar, consistent formatting of footnotes and citations, accuracy of references and citations, names and positions.
When I edit a translation, I will make sure
that figures of speech are correct, that cultural references are not lost in translation and that culture-specific text conventions are not ignored.

Just like each author has their personal style, every translator does as well. Literary translations require a vast cultural knowledge both for the world the book it set in as well as for the language it is translated into.
The challenge: Staying true to the author’s AND the translator’s voice.
